Nice to meet you

I’m Filipe, a designer based in Porto who is learning Japanese. Kanji no Chikara is my corner of the internet for looking at one character at a time, without the noise of a study app.

The name, piece by piece

  1. What it is

    A reference for exploring kanji. Each of the 2,211 characters has its own page with meanings, on’yomi and kun’yomi, stroke count, radical and a few common words that use it.

  2. What it isn’t

    A course. There are no accounts, flashcards, streaks or scores, and it doesn’t track anything. The resources page lists good tools for that. I’m not a Japanese teacher; the content comes from established open dictionaries.

  3. Where it comes from

    Meanings, readings and details from KANJIDIC2, example words from JMdict, levels from Jonathan Waller’s community JLPT lists. Nothing on the character pages is invented. See the sources.

  4. Known limits

    • Covers the 2,211 kanji in the community JLPT lists, not every kanji.
    • JLPT levels are approximate: there are no official lists since 2010.
    • Example words are picked automatically; some characters have none.
    • No stroke-order diagrams or example sentences yet.
